Glossary

Diegetic- this means that the sound on or off-screen is the sound that belongs to the scene, naturally for example the radio music, traffic , birds etc.


Non diegetic- This means that the sound that is used is not natural to the scene and is added in during post production to add meaning or impact to a scene.


Ambient- Ambient means a style of instrumental music with an electronic arrangement with no continual beat this is used to create a mood within the audience.


SFX- This means sound effects which are manufactured or enhanced sounds that are used in many forms of media including films, televisions radio ,video games etc.



Mood- Music to portray or change a mood like uplifting music for happy etc.


Tone-A empahasis of the voice which conveys a particular feeling or mood


Genre- Types of a musical composition that are categorized by similar characteristics such as rock, pop , indie etc.


Theme Music- Theme music is a tune that is composed to identify a television or radio programme.


Voiceover- a voice over is the voice of a programme n unseen narrator or a character from the film/ programme that is not seen speaking.

Musical score- A musical score is sheet music, it is written and the composition show parts for different instruments.

Synchronous sound- synchronous sound is a sound that is syncronised with is veiwed on screen.

Contrapuntal- Contrapuntal means music that is characterised by counterpoint.

Silence- Silence means the absence of sound.

Selective sound- Selctive sound is when in post production they add sound to intensify it.

Sound bridge- A sound bridge is when the scene begins with the carry over sound from the previous before the new sound begins.
